About the museum
The Church of St. Agnes in Kraków dates back to the mid-15th century, when in 1459 Hincza of Rogów founded a wooden church for nuns. In 1558 a brick church with a monastery was built on its site; it was rebuilt after a fire in 1655–1658. After the partitions of Poland the building served as a warehouse and then passed into private hands.
In the 1920s a civic committee bought the church and carried out the most urgent repairs. In 1929 the church was handed over to the State Treasury for the needs of garrison pastoral care, and after the Second World War it again served as the garrison church. In 1993 the military parish dedicated to St. Agnes was reactivated.
Next to the church, four rooms present archival and museum collections related to military chaplaincy. One of the rooms is called the Chaplains’ Room (Izba Kapelańska). The exhibits include soldiers’ prayer books, a collection of eagle badges from military caps, a plaque removed from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw, an urn with ashes from Katyń, and portraits of the church’s rectors, the chaplain-generals (generałowie-dziekani) of the Polish Army and the field bishops.
