About the museum
The Museum of Caricature was established in 1978 on the initiative of Eryk Lipiński, a cartoonist and satirist who had been collecting the drawings of other artists since the early 1960s. Initially it operated as a branch of the Museum of Literature, and its first exhibition, “Warszawa w karykaturze” (Warsaw in Caricature), opened in 1980. Since 1983 it has been an independent institution at ul. Kozia 11, in the former orangery (winter garden) of the Primate’s Palace, which Lipiński found and had restored. In 2002 the museum took the name of its founder.
The collection now numbers more than 25,000 drawings, as well as works in painting, poster and sculpture, from the 18th century to the present. It includes works by, among others, Daniel Chodowiecki, William Hogarth, Honoré Daumier, Franciszek Kostrzewski, Zbigniew Lengren, Anna Gosławska-Lipińska (Ha-Ga) and Szymon Kobyliński; Polish contemporary caricature is the most extensively represented. The museum has staged more than 300 exhibitions at its own premises, as well as many exhibitions in Poland and abroad.
The museum’s second home is Lengrenówka at ul. Brzozowa 6/8a, the former flat and studio of Zbigniew Lengren. After almost five years of renovation it became an open studio with exhibitions, educational activities and meetings. In 2015 the British newspaper “The Guardian” included the museum in its list of the top ten unique museums in Europe.
