About the museum
The Muzeum Leśnictwa (Forestry Museum) is housed in the former farm buildings of Gołuchów Castle and belongs to the Ośrodek Kultury Leśnej Lasów Państwowych (Forest Culture Centre of the State Forests). In 1974 the park-arboretum and the group of buildings, except the castle, were handed over to the Poznań directorate of the State Forests; a year later the Minister of Forestry decided to establish a museum, and in 1976 the Forest Culture Centre was set up. The museum opened in October 1986, and since 1987 it has operated as an independent unit of the State Forests.
The first exhibitions were set up in the Dybul, named after a 17th-century miller, and in rooms of the Oficyna (wing building). Later the Powozownia (coach house) of 1854 and the Owczarnia (sheepfold) of 1849 were adapted for exhibitions; the exhibition in the Owczarnia opened in 2006. The forester’s cottage (Chałupa leśniczówka) received an exhibition in 2014.
Today the Oficyna presents exhibitions on the culture-forming role of the forest and on the history of forestry in Poland, the Powozownia shows the geography, ecology and botany of the forest, the Owczarnia shows forest technology, and the Dybul is devoted to forest protection. The centre also includes a park-arboretum with about 80 thousand trees and a demonstration animal enclosure.
