About the museum
The museum grew out of the Museum of Teachers’ Memorabilia (Muzeum Pamiątek Nauczycielskich), which from 1978 was run by a group of retired teachers, enthusiasts of collecting and of the idea of an educational museum. The collections were at first housed in the Department of Education and Upbringing, and later in the Teachers’ House. The institution adopted the name Muzeum Oświaty (Museum of Education) in 1985, when it received basement rooms in a newly opened primary school, where exhibition rooms were gradually set up.
Since 1992 the museum has been a department of the Voivodeship Pedagogical Library in Bydgoszcz (Pedagogiczna Biblioteka Wojewódzka). In February 2004 it was moved to the library’s premises at ul. Marii Skłodowskiej-Curie 4, where it occupies several rooms on the second floor. Today it has three exhibition halls.
The core of the collections consists of school furniture, pupils’ and teachers’ equipment, textbooks, photographs, recordings, certificates and fragmentary files of schools and pupils’ organisations, as well as the legacies of outstanding Bydgoszcz teachers. The museum runs permanent and temporary exhibitions, and museum lessons for pupils of primary and secondary schools and for students.
