Muzeum Porcelany Śląskiej w Tułowicach

About the museum

The museum operates on the site of the former porcelain factory in Tułowice, which was set up at the end of the 19th century by the Schlegelmilch family, linked to Suhl in Thuringia. Before 1945 the plant was one of the largest porcelain works in Silesia; its products reached European markets and, in the first decades of the 20th century, above all the United States. After the war the factory was taken over by the state, resumed production, and in 1951 began manufacturing table porcelain (porcelit). Production ended in 2001.

The buildings, restored after nine years of conservation work, were opened in April 2024 as a museum run by the Foundation for the Protection of Silesia's Industrial Heritage, which also looks after other technology museums in Upper and Lower Silesia.

The historic interiors display the wares of a dozen or so Silesian factories and manufactories, often the only surviving traces of these works. Visitors pass through the former rooms of management, accounting and marketing, and through salons with porcelain in the Art Nouveau, Art Deco and modernist styles. A particularly unusual part of the exhibition is the preserved design studio where the patterns for the vessels were created. The visit is accompanied by music chosen to match each era, and the museum holds workshops in decorating porcelain and ceramics, including in the Opole pattern.
