About the museum
The Museum of the Opole University of Technology and X-ray Tubes (Muzeum Politechniki Opolskiej i Lamp Rentgenowskich) was solemnly opened on 8 November 2013 on the II campus of the university, in the adapted attic of a former barracks building. It was created thanks to the efforts of Dr Grzegorz Jezierski, who from 2005 had been collecting X-ray tubes, initially kept in his garage, and with the support of the then rector, Prof. Jerzy Skubis, in connection with preparations for the 45th anniversary of the university.
The collection of X-ray tubes is described as unique because of the number and variety of its objects. It includes medical, industrial, diffraction and fluorescence X-ray tubes and safety tubes, as well as complete X-ray apparatus, heads, detectors, X-ray lenses, kenotrons and literature. The tubes come from many manufacturers, among them Siemens, Philips, Toshiba, Rigaku and Oxford Instruments; most are post-war tubes, mainly of glass. The collection is accompanied by a modest exhibition of X-ray photographs.
The second section of the museum documents the beginnings of the Opole technical university, which grew out of the Consultation Point of the Silesian University of Technology and the Opole Engineering College (Wyższa Szkoła Inżynierska w Opolu). Documents, photographs, anniversary publications, sports trophies and memorabilia of the university's former publishing house are shown here, including a box for linotype matrices and typesetters' type. The museum also provides educational materials on X-radiation and the life of Wilhelm Röntgen.
