About the museum
The museum was established by resolution of the City Council in December 1990, in order to collect, catalogue and protect objects of material culture in line with museum standards. It took over collections gathered from 1976 in the Miejska Izba Regionalna (Municipal Regional Room) by members of the Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Miasta Rudy Śląskiej (Society of Friends of the City of Ruda Śląska). The collection is constantly growing thanks to gifts and purchases from the city budget.
The museum’s patron is Maksymilian Chrobok, one of the organisers of the Regional Room. The museum is housed in a building from the early 20th century, built for educational purposes: it accommodated a vocational continuing school and a school of home economics, and later served as the town hall of the Ruda gmina.
The permanent exhibition “Czas to pieniądz” (Time Is Money. The History of Civilisation and Economy Using Ruda Śląska as an Example) occupies two floors with eight thematic rooms. It tells the history of the city from the Middle Ages to the present, through the lens of the industrial revolution and the development of the economy. The museum also runs museum lessons, workshops for children, historical walks and outdoor games.
