About the museum
The Babiogórski Ośrodek Historii Turystyki Górskiej (Babia Góra Centre for the History of Mountain Tourism) was established in 1966 on the initiative of Edward Moskała and was the first museum in Poland devoted to mountain tourism. It was housed in a former wooden storehouse rebuilt on the model of the first hostel. In 2011 the exhibition was moved to the former building of the Mountain Volunteer Rescue Service (GOPR), the so-called goprówka, next to the PTTK hostel on Markowe Szczawiny. The institution has borne its present name since the resolution of the PTTK Mountain Tourism Commission of 6 June 2016.
The centre lies on the Markowe Szczawiny clearing in the Beskid Żywiecki, within the administrative boundaries of Zawoja and on the territory of the Babia Góra National Park. The modern, partly multimedia exhibition covers about 30 m² and presents the development of tourism around Babia Góra. It shows tourist souvenirs and biographical collections devoted to Hugo Zapałowicz and Kazimierz Sosnowski. In future the old building is to house an exhibition on high-mountain tourism.
