About the museum

The history of the open-air museum in Sidzina goes back to 1963. Two enthusiasts of local culture, the teacher and regionalist Adam Leśniak and the local parish priest, Fr. Józef Świstek, noticed that old everyday objects were disappearing en masse with the electrification of the village. From the 1950s Fr. Świstek had been collecting folk religious figures, paintings on glass and other monuments, and the first regional room was set up in the Children's Holiday Home in Sidzina.

The open-air museum opened in 1963, on the 400th anniversary of the village's founding, on a field called Binkówka by the Kamycki stream. The first object was the cottage of Banasik, brought from the hamlet of Mała Sidzinka. The institution operated as a branch of the Orava Ethnographic Park in Zubrzyca Górna, and since 2009 it has been an independent municipal cultural institution of the Bystra-Sidzina commune.

Today the exhibition consists of several historic wooden buildings: cottages from the 18th and 19th centuries (including the Banasik cottage from 1807 and the cottage of the village mayor, wójt, Maj), a wooden forge, a water mill with a joinery workshop from Jordanów, a Loreto belfry from 1937 and a two-storey granary from 1897, in which the National Remembrance Room is arranged, devoted to the September Campaign of 1939 and the fighting of 1945. The open-air museum runs museum lessons and workshops in traditional crafts and organises outdoor events.
