About the museum

This natural site below Baba hora is linked with two important Slovak writers. In the 1880s Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav walked here, looking for inspiration for his work Hájnikova žena (The Forester's Wife). At the beginning of the 20th century the prose writer Milo Urban was born in the original lodge, which was destroyed by fire in 1912; today's building stands on its foundations.

The Hájnikova žena exhibition was opened in October 1979 during the 25th Hviezdoslavov Kubín recitation competition, and it is the first literary museum in Slovakia devoted to a single work by a poet. It presents the environment from which Hviezdoslav drew inspiration, the origin and editions of the poem, and its treatment in fine art, theatre and film. In the neighbouring building there is an exhibition on Milo Urban, writer, publicist and translator, who remained faithful to Orava in his work too.
