About the museum
The museum is housed in the Classicist town hall building in Sochaczew, dating from the 1830s. In September 1939 the town hall housed the command post for the defence of the town. The collecting of exhibits began in the early 1970s on the initiative of the Stowarzyszenie Miłośników Ziemi Sochaczewskiej (Association of Friends of the Sochaczew Land), and the town hall has been the seat of the museum since 1977, when the institution received the status of a state museum. Today it is a local-government cultural institution of the town.
The main exhibition is “Pole bitwy 1939–1945” (The Battlefield), presenting weapons, equipment, uniforms, photographs and documents of soldiers of the Polish Army who fought in the Battle of the Bzura. It is one of the richest collections of its kind in the country, and the museum describes itself as the most magnificent museum of a single battle in Poland. It is preceded by the exhibition “Nad Bzurą bez zzmian” (On the Bzura, Without Changes) on the positional fighting on the Bzura and Rawka rivers in 1915.
Three rooms on the ground floor are devoted to the history of Sochaczew and the surrounding area, and in the courtyard there is an outdoor exhibition of combat equipment, including a T-34/85 tank and a MiG-21 R aircraft. The museum also carries out research, runs temporary exhibitions and has a small bookshop.
