About the museum
The Museum of the Central Vistula and the Land of Wyszogród was established in 2012, and since 2018 it has been a branch of the Mazovian Museum in Płock. It is housed in the building of the former branch of the Płock Scientific Society at Rynek 1. It stands on the site where, until 1939, the buildings of the Wyszogród kahal (Jewish community) were located.
Wyszogród has been linked with the Vistula since ancient times: the river attracted settlers already in the Neolithic, and after the Second Peace of Toruń it became a route for rafting grain and salt to Gdańsk. Many granaries were built in the town, and Jewish merchants, mentioned from 1423, also settled at the crossing of trade routes.
The institution collects and documents monuments connected with shipping, trade and the customs of people living along the middle Vistula and in the former Wyszogród land. The collections are divided into sections: archaeology, ethnography, multiculturalism and the world wars, and a separate exhibition shows the flora and fauna of this stretch of the river. In the galleries you can see archaeological finds and panels on the hillfort in Szeligi, memorabilia of the Jews of Wyszogród, boats, nets and fishing baskets, and weapons connected with the Battle of the Bzura.
