About the museum
The Workshop Museum of Józef Ignacy Kraszewski (Pracownia-Muzeum Józefa Ignacego Kraszewskiego) came into being thanks to the collecting passion of Marian Walczak (1926–1987), a craftsman and bibliophile, who for 30 years gathered a collection devoted to the writer and his work. He handed the collection over to the President of Poznań on 3 May 1979, on the 150th anniversary of the Raczyński Library, on condition that it remain in the city as an indivisible whole. The workshop opened in 1986 as a branch of the library, in a renovated tenement house at ul. Wronieckiej 14.
The book collection numbers nearly 3 thousand volumes, including more than 220 first editions of Kraszewski's books, as well as several dozen manuscripts, letters, photographs and press documentation. The permanent exhibition is the “Gabinet Kraszewskiego” (Kraszewski's Study): gifts presented to the writer during the celebrations of his 50th jubilee of literary work in Kraków in 1879, including jubilee albums and addresses, inkwells, goblets, and a carved armchair with the coats of arms of the former voivodeships of Greater Poland.
Since 23 February 2026 the museum and the neighbouring House of Literature (Dom Literatury) have been closed for a two-year renovation. In the two connected tenement houses at ul. Wronieckiej 14 and 15 the Literature Tenement (Kamienica Literatury) is to be created, a modern cultural and social centre that will preserve and develop the activities of both branches.
