About the museum
The Museum of Applied Arts is the only museum in Poland devoted to applied art. Its collections come from the holdings of the Poznań Society of Friends of Learning, the Mielżyński Museum and the German museum named after Emperor Frederick III, and after the war they became part of the National Museum in Poznań. In 1965 the Museum of Artistic Crafts was established as a branch of the National Museum in Poznań, based in the rebuilt Raczyński building on Góra Przemysła; in 1991 it was renamed to its present name.
A princely and later royal castle once stood on the hill, the seat of the Grand Starost of Greater Poland. The building, destroyed in 1945, was not rebuilt, apart from the Baroque Raczyński building from 1783. In 2010–2013 a historicising castle building was erected, with a tower raised on the remains of a 13th-century structure, and it was connected to the Raczyński building. The Przemysł Hall and the tower with viewing terraces were opened on 26 June 2016, and the new permanent exhibition on 26 March 2017.
The exhibition occupies four floors and about 1,500 m² and shows around 2,000 objects from the Middle Ages to the present: furniture, ceramics, glass, metalwork, weapons, jewellery, textiles and clothing. Alongside Polish and European objects, items from other continents are shown, viewed from a European perspective. The museum’s inventories contain around 12 thousand items.
