About the museum

The Muzeum Literackie Henryka Sienkiewicza (Henryk Sienkiewicz Literary Museum) opened on 10 June 1978 and is the youngest museum in Poland devoted to this writer. Sienkiewicz had no obvious links with Poznań; he never visited the townhouse at Stary Rynek 84. The connection with the city came through Ignacy Moś, who devoted most of his life to collecting memorabilia connected with the Nobel laureate, his work and his family, and handed the collections over to the Raczyński Library in Poznań.

The city authorities allocated an exceptional 16th-century townhouse on the Old Market as the museum’s seat; its owners included Jan Baptysta Quadro, the builder of the Renaissance Town Hall, and Cyryl Ratajski, the city president. The exhibition was arranged to reflect the atmosphere of the era in which the writer lived and worked. It features period furniture, works of art and memorabilia, and one of the rooms has multimedia.

The collection includes, among other things, a replica of the Nobel Prize medal from 1905, the collection of sculptor Franciszek Ksawery Black with a cast of the writer’s hand and a death mask, manuscripts, including a fragment of “Potop” (The Deluge), and set designs for the 1973 film “W pustyni i w puszczy” (In Desert and Wilderness). The museum also has a book collection of almost 5,000 titles.
