About the museum

The Santa Marta Lighthouse is associated with the former Santa Marta fort in Cascais, and it remains in operation as an aid to coastal navigation. In 2006 a rehabilitation project, the result of a partnership between Cascais Municipal Council and the Portuguese Navy's General Staff (Estado-Maior da Armada), turned the fort and the lighthouse into a cultural and leisure space without removing their maritime signalling function. The restoration project was carried out by the architects Francisco and Manuel Aires Mateus.

The museum occupies the former lighthouse-keepers' houses and is organised into two exhibition areas and an auditorium. The first area presents objects related to Portuguese lighthouses, including Fresnel lenses; the second recalls the daily life of the lighthouse keepers. A film of about 15 minutes tells the history of lighthouses in Portugal.

The complex also includes a reception area, a documentation centre, a café and access to the old fort batteries, from where the sea can be seen.
