About the museum
The Casa-Museu Egas Moniz occupies the former Casa do Marinheiro in Avanca, where Egas Moniz's ancestors were born and where he himself was born. To save it from ruin, he had it rebuilt in 1915 to a second design by the architect Ernesto Korrodi, and afterwards extended and enriched it, giving it the appearance of an 18th-century manor house.
With no descendants, the couple decided that the house should host a regional museum. The Casa-Museu opened on 14 July 1968 and preserves the atmosphere of the professor's time, except for a few rooms built to store the collection from his house in Lisbon.
The interior contains coffered ceilings and furniture of various styles, Companhia das Índias porcelain and other porcelain and faience, glass and crystal, Portuguese painting, prints, sculpture, goldsmithing and tapestry. The science section presents objects linked to the discoveries of cerebral angiography and prefrontal leucotomy, which earned Egas Moniz the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1949.
The visit extends to the Quinta do Marinheiro, a nature trail, and the restored Moinho de Meias, fed by the Gonde river and used for educational activities.
