About the museum
The Casa-Memória Joana Luísa e Sebastião da Gama was created in 2021 following an agreement between the Municipality of Setúbal, the Parish Council of Azeitão and the Associação Cultural Sebastião da Gama. It is housed in the building that was the residence of Joana Luísa, widow of the poet and teacher from Azeitão, who devoted her life to promoting and preserving the work and memory of the “poet of the Arrábida”.
The permanent exhibition presents a timeline with the main dates in the life of the couple, and two documentaries, “Sebastião da Gama e Joana Luísa: uma história de Amor e Poesia” and “A Região dos Três Castelos”. Temporary exhibitions and other initiatives present the documentary collection, with books, letters and manuscripts by the poet, and personal objects.
The documentation centre holds Sebastião da Gama's manuscripts and Joana Luísa da Gama's personal library. The house is part of the network of municipal museums of Setúbal.
