About the museum
The Centro Interpretativo do Roaz do Estuário do Sado (CIRES) has operated since 5 June 2018 in the Casa da Baía – Centro de Promoção Turística (Tourist Promotion Centre) in Setúbal. It is a project of the Câmara Municipal de Setúbal, developed with the support of the Ministério do Ambiente (Ministry of the Environment), the Instituto da Conservação da Natureza e das Florestas (Institute for Nature and Forest Conservation) and Troia Natura.
Its aim is to spread knowledge about the community of cetaceans resident in the Sado estuary, the only resident community of bottlenose dolphins in Portugal and one of only three with these characteristics in Europe. The space was designed as a permanent exhibition, with interactive panels and tables for different audiences, and gives great attention to environmental education.
The panels present scientific content on the natural history of the region, and a central table shows the main natural areas of the estuary and the species linked to the bottlenose dolphin. Two multimedia panels reproduce the characteristic sounds of the natural environment, including dolphin vocalisations, and follow the resident community, of about thirty individuals, between the estuary and the coast of Arrábida and Tróia. A bottlenose dolphin skeleton is displayed on a modular interactive table.
