About the museum
The Museu de Arqueologia e Etnografia do Distrito de Setúbal was founded in December 1974 by the Junta Distrital de Setúbal, in the context of the country's democratisation, and opened to the public in 1976. From the outset it has been housed in an 18th-century building on Avenida Luísa Todi, to which a contiguous 19th-century building is joined, where the Centro de Estudos Arqueológicos (Centre for Archaeological Studies) is located.
In 2014 the museum's supervision passed to the Associação de Municípios da Região de Setúbal (Association of Municipalities of the Setúbal Region). The collection brings together archaeological and ethnographic materials representative of the region and some pieces of contemporary art. The annual programme includes temporary exhibitions, with emphasis on contemporary art, and the educational service promotes lectures, workshops and visits adapted to different audiences.
The museum maintains a specialised library, publishes the journal “Setúbal Arqueológica” and co-publishes the journal “Musa. Museus, Arqueologia e Outros Patrimónios”. The Centro de Estudos Arqueológicos carries out research in the field of archaeology.
