About the museum
The house museum occupies the villa where Mestre Tomás Júlio Leal da Câmara (1876–1948), a caricaturist, draughtsman and painter born in Pangim, Portuguese India, lived from 1930 until his death. In the 18th century the building belonged to the Marquis of Pombal, who used it as a relay station for changing horses between the Quinta da Granja do Marquês and the Palácio de Oeiras, and it served as a field hospital for Portuguese troops during the French Invasions.
The property was incorporated into the Câmara Municipal de Sintra in 1965, following the death of the artist's widow, who had donated it, and has since operated as a house museum. After a long exile in Madrid and Paris, Leal da Câmara returned permanently to Portugal in 1915, became a teacher and settled in Rinchoa, where he began to portray the life and customs of the saloio (rural) populations of the Lisbon countryside.
The collection brings together painting, furniture, caricature, drawing, textiles, ceramics and azulejos, as well as a photographic and correspondence archive. The museum also includes a section devoted to the artist's saloio collections, housed since 21 July 2003 in a former primary school.
