About the museum
The MU.SA occupies the former Casino de Sintra, designed by Manuel Norte Júnior and inaugurated on 1 August 1924, next to the Centro Cultural Olga Cadaval, in Estefânia. It is the municipality's art museum and has a varied programme, with temporary exhibitions, educational programmes, public sessions and cultural initiatives, such as the Prémios de Artes Visuais (Visual Arts Prizes).
The museum presents works from the Municipal Art Collection, organised in sections on the landscape of Sintra, abstract art, figurative art and photography. It also shows the collection of the teacher, sculptor and watercolourist Emílio de Paula Campos (1884–1943), which his nephew gave to the municipality in 1973, and a room dedicated to the sculptor Dorita Castel-Branco.
Since 2022, one of the rooms, the Espaço Pedro Cabrita Reis, has permanently displayed the work Uma Nuvem Negra, a triptych measuring 351 × 566 cm that the artist created for the site. The building also houses the Livraria Municipal (municipal bookshop) and spaces for temporary exhibitions, including a municipal gallery and a photography room.
