About the museum
The Casa-Museu da Fundação Passos Canavarro occupies a house acquired in 1841 by Passos Manuel and Gervásia de Sousa Falcão, which Almeida Garrett portrayed in his “Viagens na Minha Terra” (Travels in My Homeland). It stands on the Largo da Alcáçova, on the site where, according to historical records, the palace of King Afonso Henriques once stood.
It was here that Pedro Canavarro, founder and donor of the collection that forms the museum's holdings, was born in 1937. The collection consists mainly of decorative arts, including paintings, furniture, porcelain and other objects. Pedro Canavarro lived in Japan in the mid-1960s, so Oriental art occupies a prominent place.
The building also holds donations from the French painter Mimi Fogt and the woodcuts of Pedro de Sousa, given to the foundation by the artist's widow, Magda Avelar Pinheiro, and by his son, André de Sousa. The house museum also includes a library bequeathed by Pedro Canavarro.
