About the museum
The Museu do Concelho de Salvaterra de Magos (Municipal Museum of Salvaterra de Magos) was inaugurated on 8 September 2024, as part of the 11th edition of the municipality's Jornadas de Cultura (Culture Days). It is housed in the building of the Cais da Vala Real, also called the Celeiro da Vala Real (Vala Real Granary), a 17th-century building next to the former landing stage, which was a royal stopping place and a fishermen's harbour. The same building houses the town's tourist office.
The permanent exhibition route presents the evolution of the territory and its most important historical and heritage information, covering around seven centuries of the municipality's history. The themes include archaeology, human settlement, the River Tagus, agriculture, ethnography, the festa brava and crafts.
A dedicated space offers educational resources for children, who learn about local traditions, customs and habits in an interactive and creative way. The inauguration ceremony began at the Celeiro da Vala, with a video recreating the Paço Real de Salvaterra de Magos (Royal Palace of Salvaterra de Magos) and a musical performance by the Academia de Artes “O Batuque” (O Batuque Arts Academy).
