About the museum
The Museu Rural e do Vinho do Concelho do Cartaxo (Cartaxo Rural and Wine Museum) opened on 23 November 1985, in the Complexo Desportivo e Cultural da Quinta das Pratas (Quinta das Pratas Sports and Cultural Complex), with the aim of preserving and promoting the traditions of rural life, especially viticulture and wine production. The initial core of the collection, on bulls, horses and wine, was bought by the Câmara Municipal do Cartaxo in 1982 from the family of Manuel Duarte de Oliveira, a former breeding estate for bulls and horses. Other pieces were donated by private individuals.
The permanent exhibition “À Descoberta da Cultura Rural” (Discovering Rural Culture) brings together geographical, ethnographic and historical pieces about the municipality, including objects linked to bread and olive oil production, and photographs from the early 20th century. Another area deals with the territory, the people and history, with the bull, the horse and the campino (Ribatejo herdsman), cereals and the evolution of farm tools, from hand tools to mechanised equipment, including one of the first tractors used in the local fields.
The Núcleo da Vinha e do Vinho (Vine and Wine Unit) occupies a restored old winery, with the original treading vats and barrels, vine and winemaking tools, and the machines of the bottling line, and shows all the stages of production, from planting and the grape harvest to treading, racking and storage. The collection also includes musical instruments and costumes of the rancho groups that came to the grape harvest, and pieces of cooperage, basketry and brandy. In the museum there is a recreated traditional tavern, where wine and regional snacks are tasted.
