About the museum
In 1898 the watercolourist Alfredo Roque Gameiro had this house built in Amadora. The original design, with the ground floor and the tower, is generally attributed to the painter himself, and the construction also involved Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro. In 1900 two floors were added, designed by Raul Lino, which gave the building the exterior appearance it retains today.
The Roque Gameiro family left the house in the mid-1920s, and the history of the property in the following decades is poorly documented. In 1959 the upper floors, previously used as a storeroom, were already housing several families and, in the mid-1960s, the house was the seat of a local association. With the rapid urbanisation of Amadora, letters published in a local newspaper called for the building to be preserved, and in 1969 the Câmara Municipal de Oeiras bought the property.
With the creation of the municipality of Amadora in 1979, the new council inherited the building and began its restoration, keeping the exterior as it was in 1900 and largely preserving the azulejo-clad rooms. The house was classified as a monument of public interest and reused as a house for culture, continuing education and leisure. Since March 2023 it has been part of the network of the Museu da Amadora.
