About the museum
The Centro de Interpretação da República Afonso Costa (CIRAC; Afonso Costa Republic Interpretation Centre) opened in March 2025 in the centre of Seia, in a school building designed by Adães Bermudes. The former primary school was commissioned by Afonso Costa, one of the most influential figures of the First Republic.
The exhibition presents the Portuguese First Republic (1910–1926) and the life of Afonso Costa (1871–1937). It places visitors in the context of the period, with the challenges and achievements of the republican movement, and invites reflection on republican values, citizenship and democracy, past, present and future.
The centre is run by the Municipality of Seia and is part of the municipality's network of museums and interpretation centres, with a combined ticket also valid at the CISE and the municipal museums.
