About the museum
The Museu do Brinquedo de Seia is a municipal museum bringing together a collection of about 10,000 toys from Portugal and several other countries. It aims to celebrate childhood, play and the right to play, preserving memories, customs and traditions from different eras and cultures.
The exhibition is arranged in themed rooms. “Conhecer o Mundo a Brincar” (Getting to Know the World Through Play) shows toys from all continents; “Memórias de Infância” (Childhood Memories) includes mementos offered by visitors and rooms of dolls, cars and plush and rubber animals; the “Sala do Estado Novo” (Estado Novo Room) recreates, at full size, a boys' classroom from Salazar's time; and “Portugal: Décadas de Brincadeiras” (Portugal: Decades of Play) presents traditional Portuguese toys, many made by hand from paper, clay, wood, cane, cork and recycled tins.
The museum also has a room for temporary exhibitions, a mini-auditorium for film screenings that doubles as a play space, a workshop where visitors make pieces to take home, a shop selling handmade souvenirs and a café.
