About the museum
The Centro de Interpretação da Serra da Estrela (CISE) is a structure of the Municipality of Seia dedicated to the knowledge and promotion of the environmental heritage of the mountain range. Its main objectives are to promote the interpretation of nature, support scientific research, develop environmental education projects and foster nature tourism, through exhibitions, thematic courses, field trips and publications.
The centre is set in a wooded park in the centre of Seia, the town's main green space, with views over the middle Mondego valley and the neighbouring mountains. The main building houses the exhibition areas, the documentation centre, the nature laboratory, the auditorium, training rooms and the municipal photo library; a support house from the 1950s holds the herbarium. The park brings together species characteristic of the Serra da Estrela and others of Eurasian, North American and subtropical origin, with a botanical trail, an organic vegetable garden and nurseries.
The permanent exhibition, in the Sala Espaço e Território, deals with planet Earth, the Centro region of Portugal and the Serra da Estrela, with content on geology, climate, biodiversity and human geography, using interactive technology and virtual reality.
