About the museum
The Design Centre Nini Andrade Silva is located on the breakwater of the Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, in the port of Funchal. The designer from Madeira associates this building with the house of Gonçalves Zarco, navigator and first captain-donatary of Funchal. The project is an extension of the creative universe of Nini Andrade Silva, one of the Portuguese interior designers with the greatest international profile.
The centre brings together, in one space, a permanent exhibition area, a shop, a café and a restaurant. It aims to function as a place of encounter and sharing, as a laboratory of ideas and as a centre for development and innovation where different artistic expressions meet. The permanent exhibition, made up of pieces from the designer's private collection, is what gave rise to the centre.
The exhibition takes the sea as its creative raw material and offers a sensory journey through Madeira's Atlantic identity. Sculptures, photographs, videos and objects evoke the “calhau” (pebble), the sea, memory and introspection, and explain, in an unconventional way, the history and culture of Madeira and its connection to the ocean.
