About the museum
The Museu Municipal de Olhão is housed in the former Casa do Compromisso Marítimo (House of the Maritime Brotherhood), a building from the late 18th century, built at the expense of the seafarers of the Nobre Casa do Corpo Santo to house the brotherhood that supported men of the sea. The ground floor held a pharmacy and a butcher's shop, and the noble floor has the Sala dos Despachos (Audience Room), with the coat of arms of the Portuguese royal arms painted on the wooden ceiling.
After refurbishment works, the building was opened in 2001 as the Museu da Cidade de Olhão (Olhão City Museum), a name it kept until 2014, when it became the Museu Municipal de Olhão.
The museum preserves, interprets and publicises the heritage of the municipality. Its collection is extensive and varied, and includes maritime heritage, archaeology, numismatics, the canning industry, fine and decorative arts, photography, metrology, cinema, agro-maritime work, ship models, weapons, freemasonry and pharmacy.
