About the museum
The museum is housed in the Palacete Barão da Trovisqueira, built by José Francisco da Cruz Trovisqueira, an emigrant who returned from Brazil and became an industrialist, deputy and mayor of Famalicão. The building, completed in 1857, hosted King D. Pedro V and later D. Luís I and Queen D. Maria Pia. With the financial crisis at the end of the 19th century, the palacete was sold and used as warehouses, a commercial and industrial school and the town court.
In 1988 the Câmara Municipal bought the building, which was by then badly deteriorated, and began its rehabilitation in phases. Between 1995 and 2001, Bernardino Machado's descendants donated the statesman's personal archive to the municipality, which formed the core of the museum's collection. The museum opened on 15 December 2001 and has been part of the Portuguese Museum Network since 2002.
The permanent exhibition follows the life of Bernardino Machado (1851–1944) across seven rooms: Famalicão and his time, the man and the family, the scientist, the educator, political thought and action up to 1910, the republican statesman, and resistance to the dictatorship. It brings together personal objects, academic robes and doctoral insignia, documents, photographs and publications. The museum also has a documentation centre with a historical archive and a specialised library.
