About the museum
The Museu de Cordofones Domingos Machado opened in September 1995 in Tebosa, on the outskirts of Braga. It houses the personal collection of the craftsman and instrument maker Domingos Machado, whose work is internationally recognised.
All the instruments on display were made by him, using traditional methods he learned from his father. The collection includes stringed instruments from various parts of the world and others characteristic of the region, such as cavaquinhos, violas braguesas (Braga guitars), guitars, mandolins and banjos.
There are also rare pieces, among them a 17th-century viola de arco (bowed viola), an 18th-century baroque viola and a copy of an American dulcimer. Visitors can also see the workshop and find out how instruments are built.
