About the museum

The Museu Municipal Abade Pedrosa (Abade Pedrosa Municipal Museum) is housed in the former guesthouse of the Mosteiro de Santo Tirso (Santo Tirso Monastery), founded by Dona Unisco Godiniz in 978 and linked to the Benedictine Order since 1092. The monastery's current layout results mainly from 17th-century works directed by Frei João Turriano, with influences from Roman Baroque and French and German Rococo. The first museum displays in Santo Tirso date from 1915, when the archaeological collection of Father Joaquim Augusto da Fonseca Pedrosa was exhibited in the cloister. The museum was reactivated in 1985 by a decision of the Câmara and opened on 10 March 1989 with an exhibition on the archaeology of the municipality.

In 1997 the permanent exhibition was remodelled, and education services and a library specialising in archaeology were created; in 2000 an auditorium with 72 seats was installed. The renovation completed in May 2016 was part of a programme that included the headquarters of the Museu Internacional de Escultura Contemporânea (MIEC, International Museum of Contemporary Sculpture), with which it shares reception and other services.

The collection is mainly archaeological, from various sites in the region, and covers the period from the Middle Palaeolithic to the beginning of industrialisation. The permanent exhibition documents, through material culture, the daily life of the populations in different historical periods.
