About the museum
The Museu do Cardina grew out of José Cardina de Freitas Melim's passion for the past of Porto Santo. He began by collecting objects that document the island's way of life and built, at a scale of 1:5, models of craftsmen's tools and of several of the island's natural water springs, some of them abandoned and in disrepair.
The museum opened in 2006 and occupies a full-size octagonal windmill made of wood. On the walls, old farm tools and implements are displayed in niches; on the mezzanine are the models of tools and springs. The collection documents domestic life, agriculture, fishing and traditional crafts.

Ramp at the entrance, usable with the help of another person; movement in a wheelchair is only partial, and the upper floor can only be reached by stairs with a handrail. There is a service counter near the entrance.
