About the museum

The Solar do Ribeirinho is a 17th-century building in the centre of Machico. Machico City Council restored it to house the museum unit, which presents the history of the municipality over almost six hundred years through interactive resources based on new technologies.

The permanent exhibition is organised in four thematic areas and brings together figures and events that marked Machico, from the 15th to the 20th century. Among the most significant pieces are the Cruz de Machim, the portrait of Tristão Vaz Teixeira, first donatary captain of Machico, a 17th-century processional tableau, and a 16th-century seal with an ivory handle and silver signet. The collection also includes archaeological objects in ceramic, stone and metal, and an inscription with verses by the 18th-century poet Francisco Álvares de Nóbrega, known as “Camões Pequeno”.
