About the museum
The Casa das Cavalhadas museum unit opened on 29 June 2021, the day on which the festivities in honour of São Pedro, patron saint of the parish of Ribeira Seca, are celebrated, and also the day on which Ribeira Grande was raised to city status, an event that took place in 1981. The building, designed by the architect Filipe Carneiro, was conceived to keep and make known the centuries-old tradition of the Cavalhadas de São Pedro.
The route explains the history of this tradition through oral testimonies, pieces of costume worn by the various characters in the parade, equipment used on the horses and videos on the subject. The space also includes a work area where workshops related to the Cavalhadas can be held.
Casa das Cavalhadas is open to foreign and resident visitors, school classes and children from ATL (after-school care), with the aim of promoting this tradition and holding workshops on the Cavalhadas de São Pedro. It belongs to the museum network of the municipality of Ribeira Grande.
