About the museum
The Museu da Emigração Açoriana (Museum of Azorean Emigration) is housed in the former fish market of Ribeira Grande, a 19th-century building, and opened in 2005 on an initiative linked to the emigrant community. It is part of the network of units of the Museu Municipal da Ribeira Grande and is dedicated to the memory of the thousands of Azoreans who left for other countries.
The collection includes an extensive ethnographic collection donated by João Bosco Mota Amaral, as well as objects offered mainly by emigrants in America and Canada. Among the pieces are the flag and crown of the Espírito Santo (Holy Spirit), travelling trunks and a collection of photographs and videos.
The museum has a library and a small auditorium. Next to it is the Casa Lena Gal, which presents contemporary painting on the feminine and offers audio guides in English, French and German.
