About the museum
The Museu Vivo do Franciscanismo (Living Museum of Franciscanism) occupies the former church of the Franciscan convent of Nossa Senhora da Guadalupe, in Ribeira Grande. The convent was founded in the 17th century and, after the suppression of the religious orders in 1832, passed to the Misericórdia of Ribeira Grande, which turned it into a hospital. The church was closed from the early 1990s and reopened on 14 February 2013 with the inauguration of the museum.
The museum functions as a centre for interpreting and studying the Franciscan presence and action in the archipelago, in its evangelising, educational, cultic and cultural dimensions. The visit shows the life of São Francisco (Saint Francis) and the Franciscan Order, identifies spaces of devotion and Catholic rituals, and ends with a film about the history of the convent and the art of dressing sacred images, linked to the festivities of the Terceiros (Third Order).
The museum also keeps the cult of the Senhor Preso à Coluna (Lord Bound to the Column), which is carried in procession on the first Sunday of Lent. It is part of the network of units of the Museu Municipal da Ribeira Grande and has a small shop, a small auditorium and a cloister.
