About the museum

The Museu de José Malhoa occupies a building in Caldas da Rainha that was the first in Portugal designed from the outset as a museum. The original architectural design is by Paulino Montês and Eugénio Correia, and the building has been classified as a property of public interest since 2002. It stands in Parque D. Carlos I, in the city centre.

The collection brings together painting, sculpture and ceramics from the 19th and 20th centuries and includes the largest group of works by José Malhoa, a painter from Caldas da Rainha. There are also works by Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, Columbano, Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro and Delfim Maya, among other artists. In the park, outdoor sculptures by Leopoldo de Almeida, Leonor de Albuquerque Bettencourt and João Fragoso, among others, are on display.

After requalification works to improve visiting conditions, the museum reopened on 20 December 2023. Alongside the permanent collection, it presents temporary exhibitions that link the collection to contemporary artists and themes, and it has a library of more than five thousand volumes on Portuguese art and culture.
