About the museum
The Casa do Arco da Cadeia is a building from the 14th and 15th centuries that served as a jail and as the Paços do Concelho (town hall). It lost its role as the seat of the municipality when, in the 16th century, new Paços do Concelho were built in the adjoining building, today the Museu Abílio de Mattos e Silva, and it kept its original characteristics until the 20th century.
In 1958 the painter Abílio de Mattos e Silva bought the house, which he had already depicted in 1938 in the work “Óbidos Vila Antiga de Portugal”. His widow, Maria José Salavisa, carried out the architectural rehabilitation and designed the interior decoration, which preserves the medieval essence and adds the decorative refinement typical of her work. The house was later donated by her to the Câmara Municipal de Óbidos in homage to her husband.
The space is intended as a memorial to the couple and to the relationship they both had with this small historic building and with the town. It is part of the Rede de Museus e Galerias de Óbidos and can only be visited by prior appointment.
