About the museum
The Museu Abílio de Mattos e Silva was born from the wish of Maria José Salavisa, the artist's widow. Abílio de Mattos e Silva was born in Sardoal in 1908 and died in 1985. Although he was not a native of Óbidos, it was his chosen home, where he was brought up and kept a house. He began as a promising visual artist but devoted himself mainly to work linked to theatre, opera and dance.
The museum presents the artist's work in its various aspects as set designer, costume designer, painter and designer. It links these areas to the performing arts and to the artists who practised them, and promotes research and exhibitions on various themes, always with Abílio de Mattos e Silva's work present. His work stands out in set and costume design, but also in the design of posters, catalogues, books and advertising.
The museum occupies the building of the former Paços do Concelho (town hall) of Óbidos, built in the 16th century beside the Casa do Arco da Cadeia. It is part of the Rede de Museus e Galerias de Óbidos (Óbidos Network of Museums and Galleries).
