About the museum
The Palácio Pimenta, in Campo Grande, is a former summer palace built in the first half of the 18th century, named after one of its owners, Manuel Joaquim Pimenta. Lisbon City Council bought it in 1962 to rehouse the then Museu da Cidade, which had been housed in the Palácio da Mitra since 1942. The new museum opened in 1979.
It is the head unit of the Museu de Lisboa, a museum with five sites: Palácio Pimenta, Teatro Romano, Santo António, Casa dos Bicos and Torreão Poente. The permanent exhibition at the Palácio Pimenta shows the city’s development from prehistory to the end of the 20th century, with a model of Lisbon before the 1755 earthquake.
The palace also has two temporary exhibition areas (Pavilhão Preto and Sala dos Fundos), a documentation centre, a shop and gardens with a kiosk-café. The museum is a municipal facility run by EGEAC.
