About the museum
The Museu Nacional do Teatro e da Dança was officially created in 1982 and adopted its current name in January 2015. It is a reference point for museology and the history of the performing arts in Portugal and is under the responsibility of Museus e Monumentos de Portugal.
It is housed in the Palácio do Monteiro-Mor, an 18th-century building acquired by the Portuguese State and completely rebuilt after a fire.
The collections include costumes, photographs, postcards, designed costumes and sets, drawings, portraits, caricatures, posters, programmes and tickets, music and paper theatres. The permanent exhibition shows, among others, costumes by Almada Negreiros and Paula Rego, costumes and props used by Amália Rodrigues, original costume drawings by Maria Keil and Bernardo Marques, and set models by Carlos Botelho and Jorge Barradas.
