About the museum
The Museu de Santa Maria is a public institution on the island of Santa Maria, made up of five buildings: the museum units of Santo Espírito and Vila do Porto, the storerooms, the Atlântida Cine and the Quonset huts. The collections are mainly ethnographic and have clay as their common thread, as the raw material of household utensils, decorative objects, building materials and export products.
The museum's origin lies in the collections made from the late 1960s to the early 1970s by Father José Maria Amaral. The Museu Etnográfico e Paroquial opened in summer 1972; Regional Regulatory Decree No. 40/91/A of 25 November 1991 created the Museu de Santa Maria, which was inaugurated on 31 August 1996. The buildings in Vila do Porto were inaugurated on 25 July 2018.
The Atlântida Cine was built by the Americans in 1944, during the construction of the airport, and reopened on 22 June 2022, equipped for performing arts, cinema and scientific events. The permanent exhibition in Vila do Porto is planned to address the history and geology of the island, its discovery and settlement, and the socio-economic effects of the construction of the airport.
