About the museum
The Museu do Tabaco da Maia is a scientific and cultural institution run by the Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Divino Espírito Santo da Maia. It presents itself as the only European museum dedicated to research and the promotion of the tobacco agro-industry, with a focus on social and local development, and seeks to link this heritage to the socio-economic development of the six parishes in the east of the municipality of Ribeira Grande.
The permanent exhibition is organised into five areas: the weighing and pressing room, the direct-heat dryer, the indirect-heat dryer, the báscula (weighing scale) and the tobacco plantations. Temporary exhibitions are held in the Auditório Hermano Mota.
The museum also has a library and a small tea room, where liqueurs and locally produced tea are served.
