About the museum
The Museu Guerra Junqueiro is on Rua de D. Hugo, in Porto's historic centre, very close to the Sé and the Arqueossítio. The building, of unknown authorship, is a nineteenth-century civil architecture example commissioned by Domingos Barbosa, magistral canon of the Sé do Porto.
The house was bought in 1934 by the poet's daughter, who donated it to the Câmara Municipal do Porto in 1940, together with the poet's artistic estate. It opened in 1942, was redeveloped by the architect Alcino Soutinho and, in 2017, was refurbished by the architect Camilo Rebelo as part of the modernisation works of the municipal museums.
The museum recreates the atmosphere and original arrangement of the objects in the house where the poet lived in Porto, and displays collections of ceramics, metalwork, goldsmith's work, sculpture, furniture and textiles from the 15th to the 19th centuries, with an emphasis on decorative arts. The Gabinete de Desenho hosts quarterly exhibitions by artists from several generations. The permanent exhibition is currently being refurbished.
