About the museum

The Seminário Maior de Nossa Senhora da Conceição do Porto opened the Museu de Arqueologia e Arte on 9 March 1958, on the initiative of D. Domingos de Pinho Brandão, then rector of the institution and later auxiliary bishop of the dioceses of Leiria and Porto. Since 1970 it has been called the Museu de Arte Sacra e Arqueologia, and in 2020, on the centenary of its founder's birth, his name was added to it.

The museum is housed in a 17th-century wing of the former Colégio de São Lourenço, owned by the Society of Jesus. The old porter's lodge, the staircase, the great hall and the vaulted granite corridor are part of the atmosphere of the visit. The former “corredor das lousas” (slab corridor) is now a gallery of religious sculpture from the 13th to the 19th centuries. Painting, illumination, goldsmith work, medals, liturgical vestments and furnishings, and archaeology are also represented.

The church, dedicated to São Lourenço de Huesca, dates from the 16th century and is known as the Igreja dos Grilos (Church of the Crickets), a nickname given to the Discalced Augustinians, who owned the church and the college from 1780 onwards. Mannerist in style with Baroque influences, it is attributed to the Jesuit architect Baltazar Álvares.
