About the museum
The Museu Maçónico Português (Portuguese Masonic Museum) documents the history of Freemasonry in Portugal over some 280 years and promotes the values of liberty, equality and fraternity. It is housed in the palace of the Grémio Lusitano in Lisbon and is a member of ICOM and AMMLA.
After renovation works, the museum reopened on 16 September 2023 with a new permanent exhibition, organised in three sections: Symbolic, Everyday and History, and Higher Degrees.
The visit explains the layout of the rooms, the instruments used in lodge meetings, the columns, the mosaic floors, the aprons, the books and the ceramics. The rituals are not revealed: the museum presents the general practices and symbols of the organisation.
