About the museum
The Museu da Farmácia opened in June 1996 in Lisbon, at the wish of Portuguese pharmacies to preserve the history of their profession. The idea of a pharmacy museum was old, but only in 1981 did the board of the Associação Nacional das Farmácias ask all Portuguese pharmacies to donate pieces to form a collection. The response exceeded expectations. Between 1997 and 2010 the museum continued to gather pieces at national and international auctions and from collectors, until it had formed a collection of international reference. In 2010 it opened a second space, in Porto.
In Lisbon, spaces have been recreated to show the evolution of Portuguese pharmacy from the late 15th century to the present day, with reconstructions of authentic pharmacies, from the 18th-century botica (apothecary shop) to the liberal pharmacy of the early 20th century, a traditional Chinese pharmacy from Macau of the late 19th century, and an area dedicated to military pharmacy.
The section “Farmácia no Mundo” (Pharmacy in the World) presents pieces from civilisations and cultures such as Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Incas, the Aztecs, Islam, Tibet, China and Japan, and European pharmacy from the Middle Ages to 1929, the year Fleming isolated penicillin. The exhibition ends with the portable pharmacies used on the Space Shuttle Endeavour in December 2000.
